Arizona State football upsets Texas State, rallies in second half for come-from-behind win

Sun Devils score 21 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Bobcats 38-35

ASU improves to 2-1 on the season, while Texas State falls to 1-2

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State Sun Devils rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Texas State Bobcats 38-35 on Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium. The Sun Devils (2-1) trailed 28-14 at halftime, but they outscored the Bobcats (1-2) 21-7 in the second half to secure the come-from-behind victory. ASU quarterback Emory Jones threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Xazavian Valladay rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown. Texas State quarterback Layne Hatcher threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, but he was also intercepted twice. The Bobcats took an early lead when Hatcher connected with wide receiver Javen Banks for a 75-yard touchdown pass on the game's opening drive. ASU responded with a touchdown of its own on the ensuing drive, as Jones found wide receiver Elijhah Badger for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Texas State regained the lead in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Calvin Hill. The Bobcats extended their lead to 28-14 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Hatcher to wide receiver Tre'Von Bradley with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. ASU cut the deficit to 28-21 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Valladay with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter. The Sun Devils tied the game at 28-28 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jones with just over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. ASU took its first lead of the game on a 37-yard field goal by kicker Carter Brown with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Texas State drove into ASU territory on the ensuing drive, but the Sun Devils' defense forced a turnover on downs with just over two minutes remaining in the game. ASU ran out the clock to secure the 38-35 victory. The Sun Devils will return to action next Saturday when they travel to face the USC Trojans. The Bobcats will return to action next Saturday when they host the New Mexico Lobos.
